With all the attractions in the region, Sacramento is a great place to staycation.

Staycations are now all the rage and if you are lucky enough to be a resident of Sacramento, it makes even more sense to stay in your own backyard. In the valley, we are fortunate enough to have warm spring weather and lots to do so that your “vacation” will no doubt be a success. If you have been contemplating staying in Sacramento during spring break, but do not yet know where you should go and what you should do, here is a list of great travel destinations and ideas.

Old Town Sacramento

One of the best destinations for a Sacramento staycation is centrally-located Old Sacramento. You don’t even need to love history to have a great time there with so much to see and do. If your staying local includes staying in lodging to give your “vacation” an authentic feel, you must try theDelta King Hotel. The Delta King is a authentic riverboat that sits stationary on the Sacramento River and offers two restaurants for dining. For entertainment, adults and children will love the California State Railroad Museum or take a Hornblower cruise down the river. There is a large selection and variety of places to shop in Old Sacramento, from jewelry to old fashion candy shops. And, while you are in Old Sacramento, be sure to take a ride through town on a classic horse-drawn carriage.

Family Friendly Destinations

If you want your vacation to be entirely kid-related, a wonderful place to focus your time is at William Land Park. There is a variety of lodging in the downtown area to choose from including Bed and Breakfasts to larger hotels if you are hoping to stay nearby. Entertainment for the kids is what this destination is all about. Within William Land Park you can go to Funderland, theSacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town. They are all so close in proximity to each other that you can walk from one destination to the other. Funderland is a small amusement type park that offers carnival rides that appeal to the 2-12 age brackets. Kids will love spinning on the tea cups or speeding on the dragon coaster. Fairytale Town is a great place for kids of all ages who love nursery rhymes and fairytales. The park is located outside on 2.5 acres and features colorful play sets that are related to the classic fairytales that we all know. The Sacramento Zoo is literally across the street from Fairytale Town and offers award-winning exhibits and over 600 animals to look at.

Local Area Museums

Another great idea for staying home in Sacramento is focusing your time exclusively around local museums that interest your family. Sacramento has an abundance of museums throughout the city that are wonderful ways to spend your vacation at home. A great way to execute your Sacramento museum staycation is to have a plan beforehand. You may want to have a theme for the entire vacation or just a particular theme for each day. For example, if science is an interest, visiting the Discovery museum and the Explorit museum would be your main attractions.

Or, you may prefer to stay in one area instead. If so, you can simply focus on a single destination and attend attractions in that area alone. For instance, if you chose the city of Folsom as your destination, you would plan your vacation around the museums and attractions in that area. For this area, you could attend the Folsom Prison Museum and the Folsom History Museum. You would dine in Folsom restaurants and could visit the Folsom Zoo and the Folsom Historic Powerhouse.

With just a little planning and foresight, your staycation in Sacramento can provide your family with wonderful vacation memories just as a traditional vacation would.
